The Ministry of Education and National Examination Board have decided to implement letter grading system in Grade XI. With the decision, the results of Grade XI examinations are expected to be published within this week.

Executive Director at NEB Chandra Mani Poudyal told The Himalayan Times that they had decided to implement letter grading system as per the government’s decision to bring Plus Two education under school education system.

“We had some technical difficulties regarding implementation of the letter grading system. Many members of the board even said that this would have a negative impact on the quality of education, but we have decided to implement the grading system,” said Poudyal.

After the implementation of grading system for Grade XI this year, the system will also be implemented in Grade XII from next academic year. However, students appearing in back papers will be evaluated under the marking system.


The letter grading system has been in practice in the country for the last two years in Grade X examination, also known as Secondary Education Examinations.

The Grade Point Average system is divided into nine different levels, which according to educationists, will help reduce educational disparity among students from different backgrounds.

Implementation of letter grading system will help bring Grade XI and XII under school education system, said MoE officials.
