Course Description:

Objective

The objective of the Master in Population, Gender and Development (MPGD) programme is to produce highly qualified development professionals and academics professing theoretical and practical knowledge in Population, Gender and Development. Fundamentally students would impart technical knowledge on development issues and practical skills on related research. The thrust of the programme is on development where population and gender are integrated as cross-cutting issues.

 

 

Normal and Maximum Duration of the Programme

The normal duration for completing the course is two years. However, the student is allowed normal duration plus two years to complete the course. If a student is unable to complete the course within the given duration of four years from the time of admission, the University registration will be annulled. If coursework is completed within four years, additional one year for thesis can still be extended only for those students who have genuine cause for extension and should be forwarded through the supervisor on behalf of the concerned student to the Program Coordinator.

 

 

Admission info

Entry Requirement for New Student

Entry requirement for a new student in MPGD programme will be a three year Bachelor's degree in any discipline or two years Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least two years professional or teaching experience. An entrance exam will be held for all applicants to be selected for the admission.

 

Admission Procedure

A notice inviting applications for admission is publicly announced. The application forms and information brochures are provided, on request, after the payment of the prescribed fee.

 

Applications are scrutinized and the eligible candidates have to attend entrance exam on the designated date and venue. A written exam followed by an interview will be arranged for selection of students. A combined score of entrance examination, interview and academic records will be derived for result and merit list for admission.

 

Candidates, who could not submit necessary documents may be given provisional admission under special condition, are required to submit all necessary documents within a month of the beginning of regular classes. Admission will be annulled otherwise.

 

Syllabus

Course Structure

The programme follows the credit system. Each course is assigned to a certain number of credits depending generally upon its lecture, tutorial and practical work hours in a week. In theory subjects, one lecture per week is assigned to one credit as a general rule and is equivalent to 16 hours lecture in one semester.

 

The MPGD course comprises the total 63 credit hours spreading over four semesters with the following distinct components:

 

Core Area: Five courses (15 credit hours) are offered in this area to develop a foundation required to the programme.

 

Multidisciplinary Area: Three courses (9 credit hours) are offered to enable student to analyze current issues of development from different aspects.

 

Analytical Tools: Three courses (7.5 credits hours) are offered in analytical areas with the aim of developing sound analytical skills of students using different models and techniques in the area of population, gender and development.

 

Specialized Area: Six courses (18 credits hours) are offered in the areas with the aim of developing in-depth knowledge in population, gender and development.

 

Research Area: Four types of works including course, internship planning workshop, guided readings and dissertation (13.5 credit hours) are offered to enhance the research skills of the students.
