Course Description:
This programme is a full time academic course of two academic years starting form the month January in each year as per TU academic session. the objectives of MLISc course is as follows:
- to give the knowledge of basic principles and laws of library and information science.
- to provide skills of librarianship and information manger for the scientific management of libraries and information centres.
- to acquaint with social, cultural educational and communication environment of libraries and information centres for competitive, effective and efficient information services.
- to provide the knowledge and skill of management and administration of all types, sizes and subjects of libraries and information centres.
- to enable students use of modern informatiation and communication technologies in librarey and information centres.
DURATION OF THE COURSE AND EXAMINATION
The duration of the course is of two academic years and there is an university examination at the end of each year. Seventy percent attendance in the class is compulsory. the candidate shall be awarded the Degree of Master of Library and Information Science [MLISc]. A student who has passed his/her two years of study will be graded on the basis of the two year's average marks as follows:
Distinction 75% and above
1st Division between 60% and 74%
2nd Division between 50% and 59%
3rd Division between 40% and 49%
OTHER ACTIVITIES
a) Field Observation:
Provision is made for visiting of various libraries and documentation centres of Kathmandu Valley.
b) Training, Seminar and Conferences:
Special provision are made to have exposure amongst students on training, seminar, conference, projects, presentations and lecture by visiting experts.
c) Practical Work:
the department conducts practical session sin each paper. Only in cataloguing and classification certain marks are allotted for practice. Practice on computer for creating bibliographic database is also part and parcel of the course
d) During the seven years the department ahs been able to give admission to more than 150 students. And more than 90 students have completed the course. Lunching the MLISc course is the second phase of the department. In third phase department has planned to promote studies in library and information science leading to degree in Ph. D. in future.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The students seeking admission to the course shall satisfy the following conditions:
1) Bachelor's Degree or its equivalent form a recognized university.
2) Proficiency in English.
3) Basic knowledge in computer.
4) Preference will be given to the student with 45 or above percentage of marks.
5) Special consideration shall be given toe the eligible candidates from
a) the field of library and information science, science and technology
b) employee in libraries and information centres or with some basic qualification in library science education
Students shall be granted admission to this course on the basic of their academic competency in their Bachelor's Degree and the marks obtained in the entrance test. There will be twenty (20) seats.
a) 10 seats for fresh students and
b) 10 seats for institutional nomination
Syllabus
The curriculum is divided into two parts: First and Second. the first part will be of one year duration. There will be five compulsory papers in the first. Four compulsory papers and one specialization paper will be the contents of second part.
