Himalayan Java formally opens barista school
Popular coffee joint Himalayan Java on Monday formally opened Himalayan Java Barista School, which it claims is the first coffee school in the entire South Asia region.
Though the school started providing training from November itself, Lal Kaji Gurung, executive director of Civil Mall, inaugurated the school amid a function.
“We are happy to officially inaugurate the school. We have trained 50 people, including staff of Himalayan Java, so far,” said Madhav Devkota, training director at Himalayan Java Barista School.
The school will train participants on production, use of machineries, coffee cupping, brewing and serving as well as dealing with the customers.
“Though the market of coffee is increasing and its demand is growing, many people who are involved in the coffee industry themselves do not know about the quality of the coffee that is served to the customers and are unaware of various aspects of coffee brewing,” said Gagan Pradhan, founder and owner of Himalayan Java.
Pradhan said the school would offer training on various aspects of coffee to interested participants, especially students going abroad so that they can find job easily.
The demand for baristas is very high in the international market.
The school provides 3 to 4 days ´Enhanced Barista Training´ to those involved in the coffee business. The training costs Rs 10,000 per person. It also provides 10-day ´Comprehensive Vocational Barista Training´ to the students and new comers in the sector. The fee for this course is Rs 25,000.
“The enhanced training will help those aspiring to start the business as they can learn about the cost of establishment, and type and size of the machine required. It will help them plan investment and ensure smooth business operations,” said Pradhan.
The school provides training on six different modules -- meeting customer´s satisfaction, increasing coffee´s grade, increasing taste and quality of coffee, coffee brewing, use of machineries and coffee production.
Rinku Chaudhary, who recently underwent training at the school, said the training benefited her greatly in coffee making, knowing the taste and quality of coffee, and other aspects of coffee business. “As I am planning to leave for Australia, I am confident that this training will help me find job easily,” said Chaudhary.
