Guidelines amended for foreign-affiliated colleges
The Ministry of Education is getting tougher with academic institutions affiliated to foreign universities . The ministry has decided to amend the ‘Guidelines for Colleges Operating with Foreign Affiliation 2002’ and forwarded it to the Cabinet for endorsement.
The new guidelines proposed last month are under consideration at the Social Committee of the Cabinet. The guidelines envision not allowing a same college to run A-Level programme along with other graduate or post-graduate programmes. After the guidelines come to effect, a single college cannot have affiliation from more than one university. “The amendment is to update and control the loopholes in colleges with foreign affiliation,” said Roj Nath Pandey, assistant spokesperson for the ministry.
According to Pandey, the colleges will be categorised on the basis of the programme and the kind of university they are affiliated to. In the amendment, the ministry has also proposed increasing the deposit for colleges by ten fold—to Rs 100,000. Some 70 colleges in the country are running various levels of academic programmes of foreign universities . Thirty-six are running the A-Level programme.
