Studying Hotel Management Programs at Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM)

Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) has so far remained the first choice for Nepali students who look to pursue a career in the country’s hospitality and tourism industry.

At present, there are many colleges and institutions teaching university level courses in hospitality management in Nepal. Nonetheless, the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) has so far remained the first choice for Nepali students who look to pursue a career in the country’s hospitality and tourism industry.

Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), situated at Ravi Bhawan, Kathmandu,  has been playing crucial role in developing human resources and enhancing the standard of quality in tourism and hospitality services by providing craft and supervisory level skill oriented trainings to cater to the demands of the industry since its inception in 1972.

In 1999, NATHM launched Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) program and in 2003, Bachelor or Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) program in affiliation with Tribhuvan University As the industry has grown rapidly over the past decades, the need for professionally trained higher level manpower has also increased simultaneously. To cater to the present demand of the industry, NATHM has launched a two year's Master of Hospitality Management (MHM) program affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU) from 2011 and aims to produce senior level human resources.

The Academy has a firm commitment in opening the world of hospitality to the students through Capable,well-trained and experienced faculty; Well-developed curricula; High trainee employability percentage and Well-equipped training labs.

Over the years, NATHM has established itself as a major Nepali educational institution in hospitality studies. The demand for NATHM products in Nepal is such that the domestic hospitality organisations constantly search for BHM/ BTTM/ MHM graduates and are ready to recruit students of the college even while they are undergoing their studies.  In the meantime, the college also partners with different companies for tie-ups and job placements for its graduates. 

NATHM also organises educational excursions to help students gain knowledge about the different aspects of tourism.  The college also invites senior experts from the sector as guest lecturers who share their real-life experiences and practical know-how with the students with their motivating speeches.

BRANCHES outside Valley:
After realising the need for expanding hotel and tourism management related education for overall development of hospitality sector, government opened Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM)’s branches outside Kathmandu valley.Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) launched Bachelors in Hotel Management (BHM) and Bachelors in Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) programmes at Birtamode of Jhapa district in Province 1, Bardibas of Mahottari district in Province 2 and Nepalgunj of Banke district in Province 5, in the first phase.

PHYSICAL FACILITIES :
To complement its on going and future activities NATHM relies on the various physical facilities spread over an area of approximately 1.5 hectares (29 Ropanis). These are Training Kitchens and Bakeries, Training Restaurants, Training Bar, Training Hotel of 20 rooms with a Coffee shop, Theory Classrooms, Multipurpose Hall, Seminar Halls, Computer Labs, Food Science Lab, Audio Visual Room, Library, E-Library and Bus (coach for field visits)
 
SPORTS FACILITY :
NATHM has Basketball court, Volleyball court, Badminton court and Table Tennis

PROGRAMS:

Affiliated to Tribhuvan University, NATHM offers Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM), Bachelor or Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) and Master of Hospitality Management (MHM) programs .

1. BACHELOR OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT (BHM)
The BHM program has a blend of classroom and real-world learning in the curriculum to prepare students as agile business leaders of 21st-century service industries such as hotels, restaurants, travel and tourism, event management companies, etc. The BHM program has been designed to prepare the students to enter the hospitality industry at the supervisory level in areas of hotel and catering operations. The BHM program is spread over a period of eight semesters (Four Years) consisting of 126 credit hours.

2. BACHELOR OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT (BTTM)
The BTTM program has been designed to groom the students to enter the travel & tourism industry as middle management level employees. The BTTM program is spread over a period of eight semesters (Four Years) consisting of 126 credit hours.BTTM course offers comprehensive and invaluable exposure to all aspects of tourism and for this, innovative techniques likes specified lectures, case preparations/study, group discussion, problem solving exercises, audio-visual interpretations, seminars, guest lecturer, practical work, book review, industrial attachment, field work/investigations and so forth are used for effective teaching and highlight effective management practices.

Eligibility (BHM/ BTTM)
> Minimum 40 marks in CMAT taken by FoM, TU.
> Minimum of D grade in each subjects of grade 11 and 12 with CGPA 1.8 or More
> Minimum score of Second Division Marks in 10+2, PCL or equivalent in any discipline.
> And for the students those who have passed before 2079, Minimum D+ Grade in each subject of Grade 11 and 12 with CGPA 1.8 or more.

The applicants must enclose following documents with the application:
> Certificate and Testimonials of all examination Passed.
> Equivalence, Transfer and character certificates.
> Two Recent Passport sized photographs.
> Score sheet of CMAT conducted by TU

The Selection for admission will be based on the following criteria:
Total Seats: BHM-240 Seats. BTTM- 160 Seats
Seats for Open Competition: 75% (BHM-180 Seats, BTTM-120 Seats)
Seats for Inclusive Competition: 25% (BHM- Seats, BTTM-40 Seats)

Inclusive Seats will be allocated as follows:
(The applicants must submit valid documents to apply for inclusive seats)
FOR BHM:
- Women (50%): 30
- Aadhibasi/Janajati (20%): 12
- Madhesi (15%): 9
- Dalit (10%): 6
- Backward Area (5%): 3

FOR BTTM:
- Women (50%): 20
- Aadhibasi/Janajati (20%): 8
- Madhesi (15%):6
- Dalit (10%): 4
- Backward Area (5%): 2

Selection Procedure
Admissions of the students in BHM/ BTTM program of Tribhuvan University will be strictly on the basis of merit list. The applicants securing more than 40% marks in CMAT are eligible to appear for the second stage of admission test. The second stage of admission test consists of Group Discussion & Personal Interview. On the basis of cumulative marks obtained by the students calculated on the basis of 30% from the score of 10+2, 50% from the CMAT and 20% marks from the Group Discussion and Personal Interview; a merit list is published and the qualified candidates can get admission in the BHM programs at NATHM.

Scholarship Provision:
Scholarship will be provided according the criteria of Faculty of Management TU.

Internship Opportunities for Students (BHM):
The students of BHM program have to go through a yearlong internship in their 6th and 7th Semester to fulfil the requirement of the course. Internship is an important opportunity for students to sharpen the practical skills and understand the functioning of large hotels. Currently, students from NATHM are getting opportunities at world class hotels in UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Malaysia, Germany, India and Nepal.

Internship Opportunities for Students (BTTM):
The students of BTTM program have to complete a 6-month long internship in their 7th Semester to fulfil the requirement of the course. BTTM students are being offered internship at Tribhuvan International Airport by Nepal airlines Corporation since 2007 and by Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal since 2009. Since the beginning of 2020, Department of Immigration is also offering internship to BTTM students at Tribhuvan International Airport where the students are assigned the job of assisting the travelers. The internship opportunities are also available in Travel Trade for BTTM Students.

3. MASTER OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT (MHM)
The MHM program is designed to empower the graduates with necessary skills and abilities so as to manage the ever growing and highly competitive areas of hospitality management in a socially responsible, scientifically approached, and result oriented fashion. MHM degree is the best choice for students who want to work in senior level posts at hospitality companies.The MHM Program is spread over four semesters (Two Years) with 69 credit hours. This academic course enables students to climb the corporate ladder in the hospitality sector. From front desk managers to senior supervisors and executives in different areas, the programme gives graduates the leverage to choose from a wide range of available positions in hotels.

Eligibility for MHM
Applicants must have completed BHM or BTTM with minimum second division (CGPA of 2.0 or Letter Grade of ‘C’),or Bachelor Degree in any discipline with minimum second division and two years of work experience in hospitality industry. The applicants must have studied English as a Compulsory Subject.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE FOR MHM:
The students aspiring to join MHM are screened through two stages of admission tests. In the first stage, the interested candidates should appear for the CMAT conducted by Tribhuvan University. To appear in this test, applicants should fill application form enclosing the following documents:
> Marksheet & Character certificates of all previous degrees
> Transcript, Character Certificate and Migration Certificate or equivalent certificate
 > Two recent passport size photographs.

The applicants securing pass marks in CMAT are eligible to appear for the second stage of admission test. The second stage of admission test consists of Group Discussion & Personal Interview. On the basis of cumulative marks obtained by the students in the CMAT and the Group Discussion and Personal Interview; a merit list is published and the qualified candidates can get admission in the MHM program at NATHM.
