Course Description:
B.Pharm. programme is a four-year course introduced at Maharajgunj Campus under Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2000 AD. It is the only college under Tribhuvan University (TU) that runs B. Pharm. programme till date.
Goal of the Programme:
The goal of the program is to produce qualified pharmacists who could provide pharmaceutical services in the capacity of:
> community and hospital pharmacists
> specialists in technology and research
> managers of pharmaceutical services
> specialists in various scientific aspects of pharmacy
The basic professional education will enable the graduates to demonstrate a broad understanding of the scientific principles and techniques of the pharmaceutical sciences. At the same time, it will also enable them to continue their studies to undertake postgraduate training and research. The program has been inspired by the values that pharmacists should be the vital members of the health care team and they will hold job either in government or private sector in important areas such as community pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, regulatory control and drug management, pharmaceutical industry, quality assurance, academic activities, training activities and research.
In order to provide quality services in the above mentioned areas, the graduates will be able to
> demonstrate professional competence to work as member of the multiprofessional health care team
> demonstrate broad understanding of the scientific basis of the specialty of pharmacy
> integrate and apply the skill and knowledge in practice creatively as per
> Requirement in the areas identified above
> function effectively as team member of the collaborative research projects
> Demonstrate competence in searching, handling and integrating information and applying knowledge, skills and attitudes in professional problem-solving.
Competencies to be achieved by B.Pharm graduates:
B. Pharm graduates should acquire knowledge, skill and attitudes which will enable them to
i) Competently handle dispensing, patient counseling, procurement, drug storage, formulation and small/large scale production.
ii) Work as a team member of health workers in clinical setting.
iii) Evaluate drug-interaction and avoid drug incompatibility.
iv) Provide drug and poison information to the doctors, health personnel and Users.
v) Manage the hospital pharmacy.
vi) Provide over-the-counter (OTC) drugs rationally to the community and generate awareness.
vii) Plan, manage and evaluate retail and wholesale pharmacies and drug industries.
viii) Carry on further studies & research work on different pharmaceutical fields.
ix) Work as an academician in educational institutions.
x) Carry out drug quality assessment using different methods.
xi) Monitor and evaluate quality assurance system serving as GMP superintendent in drug industry.
xii) Inspect the drug manufacturing plant, storage conditions, drug handling, drug distribution, use and record keeping.
xiii) Work in an industry as a production manager, marketing manager or quality control manager.
xiv) Work on the capacity of Good Manufacturing Practitioner and as advocator of WHO/GMP.
xv) Play role in the promotion of 'Certificate of Pharmaceutical Products' moving in the international commerce.
Duration of the course:
The course is for four academic years, concentrating mainly on professional pharmacy courses and the supplementary subjects which are essential for the professional pharmacy courses.

Entry Criteria into the Program:
The entry to the program is Certificate Pharmacy from IOM or other recognized University, I.Sc. Or 10+2 (Biological Group) or equivalent degree recognized by TU. Candidates securing 50% marks in aggregate in I.Sc. Or 10+2 or equivalent or Certificate in Pharmacy is eligible to apply.
For I.Sc. And 10+2, the candidate should not be over 25 yrs. No age bar for Certificate Pharmacy.
Syllabus
Course outline:
The first year consists of 7 papers carrying a total load of 1295 hours including both theory and practical. In the second year, there will be 6 theory papers and also the corresponding practical carrying a total load of 1260 hours. In the third year, there will be 7 theory papers and the corresponding practical carrying a total load of 1120 hours and in the fourth year there will be 4 theory and practical papers carrying a total load of 700 hours. Apart from these papers, a 3 months' period is allotted to dissertation and a 2 and half months time is allotted to the in plant training with credit in the fourth year.
