Course Description:

The course on Master in Development Studies (MDevS) covers both conceptual theory and applied development practices. Firstly, it seeks to understand why and how the change in societies and communities lead to enhance standard and quality of life. Secondly, it seeks to know how different development actors can facilitate such changes.

Social analysis is directed to assist in the matters of development policy and practice. Thus, DevS products would create very attractive career opportunities on their own.

The main objectives of Master's in Development Studies course are mentioned below:

Admission info

Eligibility
Prospective individuals with a bachelor degree in Science, Humanities, Management, Engineering, and other equivalent courses from recognized institutions are eligible to apply. Besides fulfilling basic academic requirements, the candidates should appear in an entrance examination and viva voce to qualify for the admission.

Syllabus

COURSE
1. Course Code and Title: (MDEP 501) Development Perspectives (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Develop broader outlook of the students on the concept and issues of the development in its historical processes; cater a perspective on the interrelationship and contradictions of the ‘development theories’ and the ‘faculties of the knowledge’- development with law, public administration, political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, human geography and technology etc and, impart knowledge in contemporary debate of development and on development critique – includes the growing discourse on the ‘project’ of development or the ‘political economy of development’ and the political economy of ‘theorizing development’

2. Course Code and Title: (MPUP 601) Public Policy and Planning (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Introduce to various frameworks and approaches that may be employed to understand and analyze public policy, problems and processes and, address the theoretical knowledge on project planning concepts and approaches; understand development plans of Nepal and the region.

3. Course Code and Title: (MDEC 551) Development Economics (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Gain knowledge about most important economic approaches to analyze economic transformation of developing world; make them able to identify and analyze the hypotheses and processes of economic growth and development and, make able to relate economic theory and concept in real life situations.

4. Course Code: (MORD 651) Development Management (CH 3)
Course Objectives: This course orient the student in the principles of management, the organizational theories and understanding the one’s own role in view of management efficiency while working with the development agencies

5. Course Code and Title: (MCAG 502) Community Actions and Governance (CH 3)
Course Objectives: This course enables students to understand and appreciate the community led approaches to development and environment management;, to understand the dynamics of environmental governance; undertake analysis of forces affecting democratic decentralization; analyze civic engagements in environment governance; understand and conceptualize social movements and environmental issues and understand the dynamics of empowerment and exercise of rights over natural resources. Provide students with relevant theoretical knowledge, appropriate skills and methods to understand the community and; make them able to analyze the grassroots situation, people in groups and their institutions through the design of the CD programs.

6. Course Code and Title: (MECD 701) Environment, Climate Change and Development (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Familiarize the students with the natural resources, the environmental distortions and development implications, conservation and management techniques for the precaution of the environment. Gain a greater understanding of environment, the climate change and their implications and of the processes, issues and debates surrounding adaptation and mitigation; build the knowledge base who do not have existing specialism in the field but who may take new responsibility or interest in the integration of environment and climate change management into development planning, projects and policy.

7. Course Code and Title: (MASD 552) Agrarian Structure and Development (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Provide the theoretical knowledge of the agrarian structure and development and impart skills and techniques for efficient management of the land resources for sustained agricultural and rural development.

8. Course Code and Title: (MPDE 602) Project Design and Evaluation (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Address the theoretical knowledge on project and offer the methods and processes for the project preparation with exposures to the field based practitioners and impart skills, techniques and tools for the appraisal with detail analysis.

9. Course Code and Title: (MPOL 553) Poverty and Livelihoods (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Provide students with the solid theoretical foundations of the concepts of poverty, its critical processes and need individual and social welfare, poverty and access to the productive resources etc with their participation for development.

10. Course Code and Title: (MRMC 603) Research Methods - Epistemology and Concepts (CH3)
Course Objectives: Enhance capacity to properly identify, formulate and develop a research problem, develop and implement a design, seek answers to the research questions, apply the tools a techniques for drawing quantitative inferences and generate clear and coherent write up of research results.

11. Course Code and Title: (MRMT 604) Research Methods - Tools and Practicum (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Gain hands on practical knowledge of research methods by involving the students in each and every processes of social science research; able to state and assess the problems and setting objectives, designing methods, data collection, analyzing the data and methods to transform data into information and able to develop a full fledge research proposal.

12. Course Code and Title: (MGSI 503) Gender and Social Inclusion (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Respond to the need for further specialization and professionalization in the field of women, gender relations and development; provide framework for new forms of analysis of social change, policy formulation and strategies towards women’s empowerment within the context sustainable development.

13. Course Code and Title: (MPMD 605) Project Management for Development (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Provide the theoretical knowledge of the project management and develop the skills and techniques for efficient management of the development projects and, make familiar with the logical framework analysis as a management tool.

14. Course Code and Title: (MCRS 606) Case Studies Review and Seminars (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Expose the students to the global change in development practices and innovations; review the issues of development in the regions.

15. Course Code and Title: (MSRC 505) Resource Conflicts and Management (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Enhance ability to understand the inequality, social inclusions as a root cause of the conflict and, obtain the theoretical knowledge of the techniques and aspects of resource conflicts and their conflict management

16. Course Code and Title: (MDIS 506) Regional Development Politics in South Asia (CH 3)
Course Objectives: Expose the students in reviewing the context of development in the South Asian region with respect to the development issues, the practices and innovations in different sectors and/or the countries and draw lessons for use of national development.

17. Course Code and Title: (MTHR 751) THESIS (CH 12)
Course Objectives: Expose the students to the independent research activities that are multidisciplinary, comparative and pluralistic and focus on the policy issues. Purpose of such research is to prepare a rigorous analytical and methodological foundation geared towards theoretical innovations.
