Ministry seeks clarification from 15 academic institutions

It may take action against the institutions after 15 days if clarifications are unsatisfactory

KATHMANDU, Nov 8: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) has sought clarifications from more than a dozen academic institutions for operating illegally.

Informed ministry officials said a public notice will be issued on Friday asking the institutions to give reasons for operating without renewal, evasion of government taxes and their operation without registration within 15 days. If the clarifications are not satisfactory, the ministry is likely to scrap the registration of these institutions.

According to Binod Neupane the press information officer of MoE “The education institutions have been given a formal time period of 15 days to address their issues according to the principle of natural justice.”

The ministry has found the educational institutions involved in using foreign programs as a measure to not register their programs. According to the sources, they have been also found to be involved in running their institutions without a renewal of their registration. Another category of institutions have been found to have evaded taxes. The ministry has sought proper justification from the educational institutions in line with the issued directive of running a program by getting approval of foreign universities.

According to MoE, many institutions were issued notices about their illegality in the past, “Some have responded and some have not. However, this is the last formal notice issued before the government scraps the institutions”, Neupane added.

Some of the educational institutions in the list are Bridge water International, Malpi International College, Capital College, Kathmandu Valley College, Apex Life School, South Western College, Everest Education, Kathmandu Wild Institute, Pentagon Education, Polygon College are some of the colleges in Kathmandu.

Similarly, Sky international college and Western Mega College of Butwal, Western Business College of Dhangadhi, and Cosmos International College of Pokhara are some of the colleges outside the valley.

“The government has reached a conclusion to scrap the education institutions that went against the rule of law which has obliged the government to take this step”, added Neupane.
