Nepali scientist's invention draws global attention
Demand for the drying technology invented by Nepali scientist Prof Bhesh Bhandari who is working at the Queensland University, Australia is increasing globally. The drying technology is used for ripening fruits with the use of powder.
Through this technology, ethylene gas is transformed into powder that helps in ripening the fruits in a more effective and healthy way before taking them to the market.
Prof Bhandari who is with the University for the past 20 years invented this technology just last month. With the use of this technology, fruits need not be stored for ripening after picking. Fruits and vegetables like tomatoes can be ripened during the period of their transportation to market itself.
The drying technology is drawing global attention since it is economical as well, said Prof Bhandari who this reporter caught up with in the capital few days ago. Commercial use of this technology has been initiated in many countries including in Europe, America and Asia, he said.
Prof Bhandari has invented this technology after carrying out a long study, drawing from his experience and research in the field concerned. Before the invention of this technology, ethylene gas filled inside a cylinder for ripening fruits was not safe for use. Besides, this method was costlier, lengthier and riskier than the drying technology.
Once the powder developed from ethylene gas is applied to fruits after harvest, it is changed into a form of gas at a certain temperature and starts working. Prof Bhandari spent his valuable four years to invent this technology. For this, he has received an ´Excellence in Drying Award´ on the sidelines of the international Convention on Food Technology held in China recently.
The award is presented every four years to an agro scientist making special contributions to the field of agriculture.
Bhandari born in Pyuthan in 2014 BS did his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from Dang, proficiency certificate level under the faculty of science from Birgunj-based Thakurram Campus and bachelor´s degree in dairy technology from India. He received his PhD degree from France.
