Nepal Police has directed the British Council to submit question and answer sheets of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination, a popular English proficiency test examination.

Based on the directives from Metropolitan Police Range, Teku, the British Council on Saturday cancelled its IELTS examination.

“We postponed the examination in line with police directives. We are fully cooperating in the investigation,” said Suchita Shrestha of the British Council.

The British Council Nepal has also posted a notice online, saying that IELTS tests scheduled for Saturday was cancelled.

“This is because police are investigating suspected breach of IELTS confidentiality in Nepal. IELTS take allegations of fraudulent activity extremely seriously,” reads the notice published in its official Facebook page. “We are cooperating fully with the Nepalese authorities’ investigation into this incident. The police have issued instructions that IELTS examinations should not take place on January 20.”


According to investigating officials, there are credible tips that the question of the IELTS examination was leaked. “Investigation is under way. We have asked them [British Council and IDP] to furnish the question and answer sheets of the examination held on January 6,” said Superintendent of Police Ram Dutta Joshi, spokesperson for Police Range, Teku. “A case on fraud charge has been filed against three individuals who had apparently collected hefty sums from students after leaking the question paper.”

SP Joshi did not elaborate.
Police have already filed a case against Suraj Lama of Nepal Worldwide Consultancy and his aides Bidhan Acharya and Ganesh Upadhyay.

Police had written two letters on Wednesday, asking the British Council to cancel all its examination scheduled on January 20 and following up on their directives to submit the answer and question sheets.

The IELTS has been high on demand because of the growing number of students opting for overseas studies. The test is a prerequisite for admission in popular academic institutions in Australia, the United States and the UK.
