TU likely to placate TUTH director
Following intense pressure from the employees at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and the public‚ the government and the Tribhuvan University have decided to fulfil some of the key demands of TUTH director‚ Dr Bhagwan Koirala. Appointed TUTH director on November 11 last year‚ Dr Koirala had tendered his resignation on March 1 citing government indifference towards the hospital and lack of cooperation from Tribhuvan University Teacher’s Association and Unions.
Koirala had urged the government to remove hurdles that have made his job difficult or accept his resignation. According to a source‚ the TU has agreed to meet some of his concerns as the government does not have time to appoint a new director with the elections approaching fast. A source revealed that the TU has agreed to Dr Koirala’s demand that the Institute of Medicine be allowed to spend up to Rs 10 million without approval from the TU. This is a marked increase from the earlier ceiling of Rs 3.5 million. TU Vice-chancellor‚ Hira Bahadur Maharjan‚ said they are working to address some of Koirala’s demands. He said executive council is considering to up the budget ceiling for the IoM soon.
