Varsity promotion process halted
Kirtipur: Agitating Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association (TUTA) members today halted the interview process for promotion of Tribhuvan University teachers to the post of professors and readers that was scheduled by TU Service Commission.
TUTA said it was compelled to halt the interviews as university officials did not hold talks with the association’s representatives as was promised.
TUTA had been staging sit-in in front of the Vice Chancellor’s Office since January 24 to press the TU administration to implement past agreements.
On September 25, TU officials and TUTA had agreed to announce special vacancies for Teaching Assistants to give them permanent status. They had also decided to form a five-member probe committee to investigate the need of professors in TU. But none of the agreements were implemented.
Prem Raj Khaniya, general secretary, TUTA said, “We had earlier decided to halt the interview if talks with TU officials did not proceed in a positive direction, but the officials did not come for talks.”
He said TUTA would not allow the interview to be held tomorrow as well, but they would follow another form of protest without disturbing the interview from Friday.
Ishwor Chandra Dutta, president, TU Service Commission, said interviews had been scheduled for promotion of 504 professors and readers from today, but due to TUTA’s protest they could not be held. TUSC had called professors and readers of Anthropology and Journalism for interview today. Dutta further said he could not confirm the next interview date of professors and readers whose interviews were postponed.
