Course Description:

Central Department of Population Studies (CDPS) was established by Tribhuvan University Council in AD 1988 in order to run a full programme of Master of Arts (MA) in Population Studies. CDPS has updated MA courses in Population Studies in 2006. Beginning from AD 2008, it has introduced Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Population Studies in order to train manpower in Demography at a higher level as a prerequisite to Doctor of Philosophy in Population Studies. MPhil courses range from technical demography at an advanced level to emerging socio-economic issues in the contemporary World. Such topics include, Human Development, Gender, Poverty, Reproductive Health, MGDs, Environment, Migration and Urbanization, Ageing, Applied and Business Demography, Adolescents, Youth and HIV/AIDS, Population and Conflict Resolution, Political Demography, Family and Household Demography, Global, Regional National Approach to Population Policies and Advanced Use of Internet in Demographic Research.

The MPhil courses emphasize training in methodological, theoretical and empirical aspects of population research with multi-disciplinary focus.

 

Admission info

Admission Criteria
Prospective students of MPhil must have possessed MA in Population Studies or Demography with at least first division from either Tribhuvan University (TU) or from other Universities recognized by TU. Students are admitted by screening through an entrance examination.

 

Syllabus

There are altogether 17 courses of Population Studies at the MPhil level. Of these, four courses of five credit hours each are offered respectively in the first and in the second semester. Students have to submit a comprehensive research based thesis of ten credit hours in the third semester upon successful completion of semester courses.

The Central Department of Population Studies has proposed 8 courses for MPhil programme, each consisting of 5 credit hours. The duration of the programme will be three semesters. Each of the first and the second semester will be devoted to teaching 20 credit hour courses. The third semester will be devoted to preparing thesis with 10 credit hours.
