Admission info

Eligibility for Admission

The candidates who have passed the B.Sc. course in Geology from the Tribhuvan University or from any other equivalent universities or institutions shall be considered eligible for the admission in the M.Sc. geology. They should have also attended the prescribed geological field training at the B.Sc. level.

Admission Criteria

The applicants will have to appear in an entrance examination of two hour duration conducted by the Central Department of Geology. An applicant who fails to appear in the entrance examination or fails to obtain a minimum qualifying score will not be allowed admission. A merit list of the qualified applicants will be prepared on the basis of the percentage of marks in their B.Sc. examination and the marks obtained by them in the entrance examination. Admission of the students will be base strictly on the merit list and the enrolment capacity of the Central Department of Geology.

Syllabus

The M.Sc. course in geology will run for two academic years. The total aggregate of marks for the two-year course will be 1000 as per the distribution indicated below (Tables 1, 2 and 3).

Candidates shall be examined at the end of each year in the respective course of theory, practical and fieldworks. The marks allocated, periods per week, and the duration of the examination for the theory and practical papers are shown in Table 1.

Fieldwork and dissertation

Fieldwork for a period of 8 weeks will be given to each student of the M.Sc. course in geology. There will be two fieldworks of four weeks of duration in each year and each of them will carry 50 marks.

The candidate shall have to select in the second year on stream of specialisation including corresponding practical and fieldwork as well as a compulsory dissertation. The dissertation will ordinarily include from four to six weeks of fieldwork.

The dissertation will be submitted to the scientific committee of the Central Department of Geology. The dissertation will be examined by the scientific committee according to the rules and regulations of the committee. The date for the defence of the dissertation will be fixed by the scientific committee of the Central Department of Geology, Tribhuvan University, generally about 4 months after the M.Sc. second year examinations.

In M.Sc. First Year, the courses will be compulsory for the all the students. The allocation of marks are shown in Table 2.
