5-year service must for docs studying in govt scholarship:SC
The Supreme Court on Tuesday has directed the government not to override the legal provision that requires MBBS doctors who studied in government scholarship to serve in government or government-aided hospital for at least five years.
Hearing on a writ filed by a consumer rights organistation Tuesday a single bench of SC Justice Abadesh Kumar Yadav ordered the government to follow the ‘Scholarship Act 2021’ until final hearing on the writ.
The Act requires all MBBS graduates who studied in government scholarship to serve in government or government-aided hospital in remote areas for five years after completion of the study.
The education ministry had issued a scholarship manual overriding the provisions in the act. The manual had introduced a provision that required such doctors to serve in government hospitals for only two years and pay a fine of Rs 210 thousands.
