Allowance cut angers TU staffers
The Tribhuvan University’s executive council has decided to cut Rs 300 from the employees’ salary to get back the allowance they got last year.
At the same time, it has doubled the allowance of professors. These steps have the employees fuming.
A meeting of Executive Council held on August 31, 2012 had decided to cut the employees’ allowance from the fiscal year 2012-13. The allowance was given to employees for improvement of administrative works. But TU had directed all its offices regarding implementation of the decision only on July 12 this year.
The Account Administration Division of TU had written to employees concerned regarding the cut in their allowance on July 26. Since the past one and a half decade, TU has been providing Rs 300 per month to the employees and Rs 350 per month as allowance to professors.
According to the TU Act, only permanent employees and professors are entitled to the allowance.
The executive council decided to stop paying allowance to employees and decided to double the professors’ allowance.
However, the decision was implemented very late and TU had already provided last year’s allowances to its employees. Now, employees of TU offices, campuses and research centres and other offices have to return Rs 3,600 each to TU.
The decision has infuriated the employees. Currently, there are around 7, 230 employees and 7, 966 professors working in TU.
An employee at the Account Administration Division said implementing the council’s decision will be difficult. “As per the decision, we have to cut Rs 300 from their salary from this fiscal year. This decision is impractical and difficult to implement.” He wondered how TU officials made such a strange decision. Registrar Chandra Mani Poudel, however, said the decision must be implemented at any cost.
