Blind, deaf pass SLC, martyr's son in distinction
Pokhara: All blind and deaf students who appeared in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination from Kaski district have passed in all the papers with flying colors. A total of 12 blind and 11 deaf students from Pokhara city sat for the exam this year.
According to Lok Bahadur Gurung, a teacher at Amar Singh Namuna Higher Secondary School, out of 12 blind students one scored distinction, 10 passed in first division and one in second division.
Similarly, all 11 deaf students from Shrijana Deaf Higher Secondary at Leknath have passed the exam in second division, informed Anita Sigdel, principal of the school.
"The students have passed the exam despite their physical disabilities. We are very proud of the students and happy for them," said Gurung.
Talking to Republica, the students who passed said that their hard work had finally paid off.
"Even though I passed in second division, many of my friends scored first division. This result has proved that even blind and deaf students can study and bring good results just like normal students," said one of the blind students.
Of the seven blind students who had appeared in the SLC exam last year from Amar Singh Namuna Higher Secondary School, five had passed in first division and two in second division. Ten more blind students are preparing for next year´s SLC, informed Gurung.
As for the Deaf Higher Secondary School, 18 out of 20 students passed the SLC last year and 29 more will be sitting for the next SLC.
One of the students from Amar Singh Namuna Higher Secondary School, Gautam Pokharel, said that the result has inspire him to study more. "I was confident I would score distinction because I had studied very hard for this exam. The result has made me very happy," said Pokharel. He has received 83.25 percent marks.
Pokharel, who had enrolled in the school from grade 6, is completely blind, and he wants to become a computer engineer. "I will take science in my higher studies which will help fulfill my dream of becoming a computer engineer," said Pokharel. "Let´s see what fate has in store for me," added Pokharel.
Amar Singh Higher Secondary School has been teaching blind student since 1981.
Martyr´s son scores distinction
Meanwhile, a martyr´s son in Chitwan has scored distinction in the just published SLC results.
Rabin Chettri, whose father Tulsi Chetri is remembered for his brave exploits in the People´s Movement of 2005/6, feels that his outstanding result has finally fulfilled the dream of his late mother.
Chettri, who goes to Amar Everest Boarding School at Bharatpur, has scored 83.87 percent. He was only four when his mother was killed during the movement.
"This is just the first achievement. I will continue this educational journey with determination and work harder to score better results in future. Think I have made my late mother happy today," said Chettri.
He said he wants to become a civil engineer and contribute to the building of roads and bridges in the rural parts of Nepal.
