British Council language service gets the axe
Kathmandu: British Council says it will not be providing English language service in Nepal from July 22 onwards.
Issuing a press release, the council said its English language teaching centre has not been able to cover costs. “We have reviewed the way in which we provide English language services in Nepal. We believe we can have a much greater impact by playing a more transformational role, encouraging a more widespread improvement in teaching standards and providing opportunities for young learners across Nepal,” said British Council Director Robert Monro in the statement.
British Council, in cooperation with government and non-government partners, provided training to around 3,000 teachers of English across the country since 2008. “We will be continuing our work in English language more generally and will readily employ them again if their skills fit our future needs,” read the statement.
Monro also said British Council remains committed to investing in improving English in Nepal on building a strong record of developing teacher training in the country. He assured that British Council will continue to invest to ensure better quality teaching and learning of English in Nepal.
The last teaching course at British Council will begin on June 27 and end on July 22. It will, however, continue to offer examinations, access to its learning centre and advice for students wishing to study in the UK ever after language service gets the axe.
