British Council language training encourages teachers, students
British Council on Wednesday disseminated findings of English for Teaching-Teaching for English (ETTE+), a teacher training project initiated to encourage communicative development of English language teaching in primary public schools across the country.
British Council, in partnership with Nepal English Language Teachers Association and Global Action Nepal, implemented the ETTE+ project in Chitwan and Lamjung in 2012/13 with the support of the Department of Education and District Education Offices. Approximately 150 primary-level teachers from 66 government schools in Chitwan and 140 teachers from 31 schools in Lamjung participated in a 15-day training. Child-centric interactive methods and activities using English as medium of instruction were primarily focused during the training. Teachers were also encouraged to use group, pair and collaborative interaction among students.
Recent findings showed increase in number of students preferring to interact in English from one percent before the programme to 46 percent after. The number of teachers giving instructions in English increased to 96 percent from 42 percent. Similarly, number of teachers using English in classroom also grew significantly to 96 percent from 72 percent.
