Call for public university
Kathmandu: Education experts have called on the government to establish a separate university to manage public campuses and provide quality education.
The proposed public university is to provide affiliation to public campuses, which are self sustaining and are currently affiliated to Tribhuvan University.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Nepal Public Campus Association yesterday, they said such a university was needed to modernise education.
Prof Dr Ganesh Man Gurung, chairperson of the University Grants Commission, said the body has already sent a draft bill on the university to the Ministry of Education.
He said, “Now the stakeholders need to start discussions on the university.”
Public campus principals and teachers had earlier said they were against the creation of a public university.
Shiva Kumar Rai, member of National Planning Commission, said, “We should develop public university in such a way that it provides quality education to produce internationally salable and competent human resources within the country.”
Education experts from World Bank said a public university would be beneficial to community campuses.
