CIAA arrests six PU officials including VC
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) today arrested six top officials of Purbanchal University (PU) for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
Issuing a statement today, the anti-graft watchdog said that it arrested PU's Vice-Chancellor Dr Mahesh Man Shrestha, Registrar Dr Niraj Pandey, Exam Controller Mohan Bahadur Basnet, Dean at Department of Science and Technology Shubha Narayan Pathak and Co-Dean Rajesh Kumar Jha and Dean at Department of Management Shyam Bahadur Katuwal.
They are accused of inflicting a loss of Rs 42.87 million to the university as they did not collecting the fees this academic year.
The constitutional body also charged that the officials failed to collect the amount of Rs 20.095 million while granting affiliation to colleges.
Out of the seven accused in the misappropriation, Dean at the Art, Education and Law Department Shambhu Prasad Koirala, however, is on the run.
Earlier on April 6, the CIAA had raided the PU's office in Morang and seized important documents to carry out investigation into alleged irregularities at the varsity.
Subsequently, the CIAA suspended VC Dr Shrestha and Registrar Dr Pandey, among other officials.
