Focus on education‚ PM tells Peace Corps
Kathmandu: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has today urged American volunteer service Peace Corps to contribute in the education sector in far-flung areas of Nepal.
According to a source at Prime Minister’s Office, a team of volunteers along with US Ambassador Scott H DeLisi visited Bhattarai at his office today.
PM Bhattarai was of the opinion that Peace Corps’ service in teaching in remote areas would be much beneficial to the country — mainly in subjects like English, Math and Science.
In the meeting, Ambassador DeLisi briefed the PM on preparation by the US to resume the volunteer service in Nepal from September.
The Peace Corps had begun its mission in Nepal in 1962 and deputed the first batch of 100 volunteers in education and agriculture assignments.
But deteriorating security situation during Maoist insurgency forced them to reduce its campaign in 2000 and 2002. The programme was officially suspended on September 13, 2004.
Peace Corps programmes have contributed in the areas of small business, education, environment, youth development, health and HIV awareness in Nepal.
