Govt indecision adds to MBBS fee puzzle

Kathmandu: Medical colleges are confused over how much fees to charge for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) due to indecision on the part of government.

While the Tribhuvan University has directed its Institute of Medicine to charge Rs 2.5 million for the entire duration of course, some colleges have declared that they would be charging up to four million rupees.

The differences in fees come as the government is yet to endorse a report by the nine-member Medical College Promotion and Development Committee.

The committee, which was assigned to fix fees, check affiliation process and monitor education quality in medical colleges, had recommended that colleges be allowed to charge up to Rs 3.146 million for the five-year course.

Dr Arun Sayami, dean at the Institute of Medicine and a member of the committee, said TU has told the institute to charge new students Rs 2.5 million.

He said, “The committee had forwarded a report to government which had recommended Rs 3.146 million as fees.” Laxman Khanal, chief of the Higher and Technical Education Section at the Ministry, said that colleges were not allowed to charge fees in excess of committee’s recommendation.
