HSEB monitoring team held hostage
Students of Gurukul National College (GNC) at Pingalasthan held a monitoring team of Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) hostage for more than five hours on Tuesday. The team members were later released after police intervention.
The monitoring team, which went to GNC to enquire about the on-going crisis at the college and help students get transferred to other colleges, was locked inside the college building by students, who were not apparently happy with the options offered by the team.
The tussle between the management of GNC has directly affected the on-going academic session. Students have not been able to attend regular classes since the start of this academic year while the classes have come to a complete halt for the last three months.
HSEB had formed a six-member monitoring team on 12 December following a complaint filed by the students. The shareholders were later called for a meeting.
The monitoring team floated an option of bulk transfer of students to other colleges during the meeting held at college on Tuesday. But agitating students took the monitoring team under their control.
“We went to the college to help students find alternative ways to continue their studies but they weren´t happy with the options we offered them,” informed Jayanti Satyal, deputy controller of HSEB. She informed that the monitoring team has already shortlisted colleges to which the students of the GNC could be transferred. “Hopefully the students will come up with a decision of choosing another college within a day or two,” said she.
Akash Gupta, one of the students from science faculty, informed they could not attend regular classes since the beginning of the academic session. “The classes resumed after Dashain but the tussle among the shareholders hampered our classes,” said he.
Gupta, who hails from Birgunj, has already paid his tuition fees for the entire year. “If I go to another college, I will again have to pay a lot of money,” he uttered.
Almost 387 students are enrolled in GNC for the current academic year under Science and Management faculty. HSEB has already issued a notice of closing down the college for breaching educational norms. Some of the shareholders of the college are still at large
