Literacy drive in Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur: A campaign has been launched to achieve full literacy in Bhaktapur, the smallest district in the country.
As part of the campaign, classes are being held in each locality.
The literacy rate has reached 92 per cent in Bhaktapur, one of the three districts in the Kathmandu Valley. The initiative is part of the government’s campaign to eradicate illiteracy in the country by 2015.
The district is moving forward to achieve the goal of becoming the first literate district with all citizens from age 15-60 literate.
The district has a population of 304,651 as per 2068 BS statistics and 60 per cent women and 81 per cent men here are literate.
Bhaktapur has to make 11,000 more people literate to be able to call itself fully literate, said district education officer Shankar Prasad Gautam.
According to UNESCO, a state must achieve 95 per cent literacy to attain ‘fully literate’ status.
The district has 69,636 households and 485 schools in 16 VDCs and two municipalities.
