NEC to launch literacy campaign in Sunsari
Itahari: The Non-formal Education Center (NEC) under the ministry of education is all set to launch a five-month literacy campaign in Sunsari district.
Students, who have recently passed School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations would be employed as volunteers for the campaign, said Chief of the Sunsari Branch of NEC Rajendra Dev Pandey.
According to Pandey, around 95,000 people between 15 to 75 years of age are illiterate. “The literacy campaign will focus on educating this group,” said Pandey.
In the first phase, educated candidates from each VDC and municipality of the district will be trained and then would be employed as instructors. “Experienced teachers will be selected to provide training to volunteers,” said Pandey. Before the campaign is launched, each VDC and municipality in the district will collect the exact number of illiterate people in their respective areas, informed Pandey. The district has 49 VDCs and three municipalities.
During an all-party meeting held in Inaruwa on Sunday, even the political parties have expressed solidarity to make the campaign a success. “We will take the responsibility of gathering and informing the educated youths about the campaign,” said Kedar Guragain, a local UCPN (Maoist) leader.
Gopal Bhattarai, deputy director of Sunsari branch of NEC, opined everyone should extend support for the campaign.
“Last year, literacy campaign was conducted in various 14 districts across the country,” said Bhattarai.
