Panel gives go ahead to Khwopa University
Bhaktapur: A study team formed to assess the feasibility of the proposed Khwopa University today submitted its report to the University Grants Commission recommending approval for the proposed university.
The five-member team, led by former TU rector Prof Surya Lal Amatya handed over its report to commission chief Prof Ganesh Man Gurung.
Team member Kedar Prasad Acharya, who is also the accounts controller at the commission, said Khwopa was now on track to become a university.
“A university needs to have suitable physical infrastructure, educational and financial status,” he said adding, “In all aspects, Khwopa has been found suitable. Therefore, the team decided to give its nod.”
“Although the team gave its nod for the establishment of Khwopa University, there is no legislation to establish it.”
He said that four new universities were in the pipeline, but all were waiting for proper legislation to obtain legal status.
There are currently nine universities in Nepal –– Tribhuvan University, Nepal Sanskrit University, Kathmandu University, Purbanchal University, Pokhara University, Lumbini Baudha University, Agriculture and Forestry University, Far-western University and Mid-western University.
He stated that if the Act was formulated for Khwopa University, it would become the tenth university in the country.
Of the five academic institutions being run by Bhaktapur Municipality, three institutions –– Khwopa Engineering College, Khwopa College of Engineering and Khwopa College are to be merged into the proposed Khwopa University.
