Poor regulation of academic calendar a bane for TU students
BAGLUNG:Sumitra Sharma of Chhisti VDC finally got admitted to master´s level studies at Dhaulagiri Multiple Campus on Friday. As per Tribhuwan University´s academic calendar for 2014, Sharma has been registered for the academic session of 2012.
Had TU run a proper system for conducting academic sessions and examinations and publication of results, hundreds of students like Sharma would not have to wait almost two years for admissions.
Most of the affected students belong to the humanities, education and management faculties. Although Sharma has been admitted, she is seriously worried about when she would be completing her education.
Admissions for the one-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed) program of the 2010 academic session are still uncertain as the admission forms have not been issued so far. “Forget about the examination date, we do not even know yet when TU will issue the admission forms,” said Shivraj Panta, an official at the examinations center at Dhaulagiri Multiple Campus.
The results for the examinations of 2009 were published on September 8. “With TU failing to manage and regulate the academic calendar, a one-year course has been taking almost three years to complete,” said campus staffer Bhupal Chalise.
Sesh Narayan Shrestha, who was admitted to the bachelor´s level in 2009, finally completed his three years of studies in 2014. “Although I have passed my examinations regularly every year, it took me almost five years to complete the bachelor´s program. If only the TU administration would understand our plight, students like us would not have to lose so much valuable time,” he said.
Even the principal of Gupteshowr Multiple Campus at Parwat, Bikash Poudel, expressed sorrow over the plight of students compelled to lose years due to the ill-managed academic calendar.
“For students who take their studies seriously and plan their future accordingly, this delay in admissions and publication of results is a huge problem,” said Poudel.
According to Bhim Mishra, a former student leader at TU, they have been complaining about the issue for years but to no avail. “The lack of seriousness shown by the TU administration over ensuring a timely academic session has greatly affected the students. We have been raising the issue but no reforms have taken place so far,” said Mishra.
