Samata to run school for inmates' children in Birgunj jail
Parsa:Samata Siksha Niketan, which has been offering education to the underprivileged and poor children in various parts of the country, is preparing to run its class for the inmates’ children inside the Birgunj Prison in Parsa.
Samata Chairman Uttam Sanjel and jailer Dhiraj Marasini signed an agreement in this regard on Tuesday in the presence of Chief District Officer Kailash Kumar Bajimaya.
Samata has pledged to construct a school building and run the classes up to grade three from the upcoming academic session, which begins from mid-April.
Sanjel said they plan to build a 10-room building that could accommodates 250 students at a time. The building is expected to complete within a month.
“Our initial plan was to take the children living inside the prison to other branches of Samata School. We later decided to set up the school at the prison so that the children could stay with their mothers,” said Sanjel.
Ten children are living inside the prison with their mothers doing time after being convicted with various crimes.
Sanjel said they will also provide school uniforms and text books to the children while the jail administration has pledged to provide the student’s stationery.
Marasini said the prisoners’ children will be greatly benefited by the school. “Some of the children
who were taken to child care centres in places like Kathmandu and Pokhara could be brought back and they could attend their classes here, close to their mothers,” he said.
