SLC Exams 2013:State-owned schools' success drops 20 percent in two years
The poor performance of community schools in School Leaving Certificate examinations continued this year with a drastic ten percent year-on-year slide in pass rate.
While over 86 percent students from private schools managed to get through the SLC exams, a mere 27 percent sitting from community schools crossed the ‘iron gate’ this year. The figures at the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE) show that three fourths of the total 310,338 students from community schools failed the examination this year. The success rate in community schools has dropped 19 percent in two years, from 46 percent in 2011 to 36 percent last year and further down to 27 percent this year. Despite the fact that over 76 percent examinees were from the community schools, the private sector with just 24 percent share dominated the results.
The results show that Salyan has the lowest success rate this year too with just 12.92 percent students passing the ‘iron gate’. Rolpa has the second lowest pass rate—mere 10 percent—and Dailekh with 11.25 has become the district with the thirdlowest success rate.
According to the OCE, 13 districts have pass percentage below 20 while 48 districts have the success rate below the national average of 41.57 percent. Mustang (82.05 percent) tops the list of districts with high success rate. However, only 117 students had sat the exams from the district. Kathmandu, with 81.78 percent, got the second position while Lalitpur with 81.43 percent stood at third position. Similarly, 79.80 percent from Bhaktapur and 67.56 percent from Myagdi have got through.
