Student body shelves strike after TU talk invite
Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Students Union (NSU) today decided to call off the valley bandh announced for tomorrow after the Tribhuvan University (TU) called them for talks.
After the postponement of Free Students Union (FSU) election on May 30, NSU had been staging various protest programmes since last week demanding TU to announce the poll date early.
TU issued a press statement today urging the agitating student union to postpone the bandh as it affects all people, and come for talks to sort out the issue.
It said, “With student unions padlocking most of colleges across the country, TU is not in a position to hold FSU elections in the stipulated time. In this light, the Executive Committee decided to postpone polls for this time and hold talks with students to resolve the issue,” adding, “TU is ever ready to hold talks with agitating students.”
UP Lamichhane, spokesperson, NSU, said, “In response to TU’s request, we postponed the bandh, but other protests will continue.”
He said if TU fails to address their demand through talks (announcement of the poll date), they will announce stronger protests.
