Students, TU reach deal on supplementary exam
Agitating students of the Education Faculty and Tribhuvan University have reached an agreement to conduct supplementary exam for the students of master’s level studying under Semester System.
A meeting held between the agitating students of the Education Faculty and TU officials late yesterday night decided to publish results of semester system in grading system.
TU Students Struggle Committee, a non-political group of students of the Education Faculty studying under semester system, had padlocked the central campus since December 22, putting forth 16-point demand to improve semester system in the campuses where semester system was introduced from mid-April 2014.
Currently, semester system in implemented in TU’s central campuses. TU’s plan to introduce semester system in all Valley campuses from January-end has faced stiff opposition from different student unions. They have been demanding improved semester system in central campuses before introducing the system in other campuses.
Sanad Kumar Shahi, coordinator, TUSSC, said ‘many hardworking talented students’ had failed in first semester final exam in the Education Faculty due to negligence of professors of TU.
“We had denied rechecking of the answer sheets but we were denied. Then we had asked for a provision of supplementary exam within a week of the publication of results for such students,” he added.
TU had been claiming that the pass percentage in humanities and other faculties have increased to around 40 per cent in semester system from 25 per cent in annual system, but the results of the Education Faculty have proved it wrong.
Out of 771 students who appeared in first semester exam from the Education Faculty, only 307 had passed. The students blame untrained teachers, irregular academic calendar, bias judgement of examiners and curriculum prepared by amateurs among others for poor the results. “This is failure of teachers, educationists, TU officials and the whole semester system, not the students,” he added.
He stated that TU also decided to publish results in grading system.
A couple of weeks ago, some students were injured during a clash between security personnel and students who were demanding improvement in semester system.
Prof Dev Raj Adhikari, Acting Registrar, TU, said, “We had earlier committed to improving semester system, so a meeting with students yesterday was fruitful and has paved the way for improvement in the semester system.”
