Suicide stirs BPKIHS: MBBS‚ BDS exams disrupted
Dharan: The Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences was in turmoil today as students of the institute launched an agitation against the institute’s education department for ‘forcing’ a student, Shreekanta Dangol, to commit suicide. The agitation disrupted BDS (Bachelor in Dental Surgery) and MBBS examinations at the institute.
The students padlocked the education department, Dental Surgery College, the office of the dean of the examinations and other offices. With the students locking the main gate of the dental college, patients had to bear the brunt.
Tension escalated further as the examiners joined in the agitation. According to the agitators, Dangol committed suicide yesterday after the dental college barred him from the BDS exams, which began on Monday, citing his poor attendance at the college.
The students have demanded compensation for the bereaved family, a fair investigation into the incident and the resignation of Shikshadyakhya(registrar) Rupa Singh. According to one of the agitators, Kumbharaj Joshi, their protest will continue unless their demands are met.
The agitators also demanded deferral of the examinations till the truth comes to light.
Later in the day, representatives of the agitators held talks with BPKIHS director BP Das, vice-chancerllor Purnachandra Karmacharya and registrar Nandakumar, but to no avail. Das expressed hope that they will find a way out through talks tomorrow.
