Three medical colleges face music for poor performance
Nepal Medical Council has decided to reduce BDS and MBBS seats of three different colleges for the new academic session.
NMC President Dr Damodar Gajurel said the regulatory body will cut the seats of Gandaki Medical College (GMC), People’s Dental College (PDC), and MB Kedia Dental College (KDC).
Acting on field monitoring reports of different teams, the NMC decided to reduce the MBBS seats from 80 to 75 at the Pokhara-based GMC.
The council has reduced the BDS quotas from 75 to 60 in the Kathmandu-based PDC. The Birgunj-based KDC will have to do away with 25 allocate BDS seats, meaning it can enrol only 35 BDS students.
"The NMC’s action follows probe panels’ reports, which pointed that the colleges were not meeting the requirements for the admission of already approved seats," said Gajurel, adding that NMC had been acting promptly on the recommendations of the panels.
Beside taking action against the colleges, NMC has also approved 10 more seats to Chitwan Medical College (CMC) for its better performance, he said. CMC can enrol 150 MBBS students from this session. NMC is authorised to regulate TU-affiliated 18 medical and three dental colleges across the country.
JMC application under review
A full house meeting of the NMC scheduled for Tuesday is scheduled to discuss an application that Janakpur-based Janaki Medical College (JMC) has filed, demanding a review of the former’s decision to bar it from taking fresh MBBS intake. According to Dr Gajurel, JMC has asked NMC to review the latter’s move to bar the college from taking fresh intake in MBBS classes. According to NMC sources, the issue might be forwarded to the Institute of Medicine and the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority for further action. Earlier, a full house of NMC, which has 20 members, had unanimously agreed to take action against JMC citing its failure to meet basic requirements.
