Tribhuvan University (TU) has decided to implement semester system for master’s level in all of its constituent colleges in Kathmandu Valley.

The oldest varsity in the country introduced the semester system from its 38 central departments last year in an effort to improve education quality. TU will introduce semester system in some two dozen of its constituent colleges in the country from the new academic session which will begin after two months. It plans to gradually expand the programme in all constituent and affiliate colleges across the country. Issuing a public notice on Wednesday, the TU has asked all its constituent colleges to present their status of enrolment and programme within a week.

 Presently, TU has 61 constituent colleges and some 1,111 affiliate colleges with around half a million students. One third of these students and colleges are in the Capital. Unlike in the yearly system, students willing to take study under the semester system must take the entrance examination and mandatorily take all exams in English medium. Similarly, it has also set a quota for colleges and departments between 100 to 300 in maximum.

The five years strategic plan of TU also envisions a provision to limit the intake of

students and make it mandatory for them to sit the entrance examination for all faculties by 2017. Concluding that the high number of student enrolment has hampered the efforts to produce quality and competitive human resource, the university has decided to replace yearly system with semester, fix the class size and limit the intake of new students.
