TU VC Maharjan directs colleges to scrap mass admissions
Vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan Universtiy (TU) Hira Bahadur Maharjan on Wednesday directed that the mass admissions be scrapped in all the affiliated colleges as per the agreement between four student unions on Tuesday.
Maharjan gave the direction during a meeting with the student leaders affiliated to All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), All Nepal National Free Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNFSU-R), and Nepal Students´ Union (NSU).
On Tuesday, the student unions affiliated to various political parties had agreed to cancel the admissions that were done by the student leaders on Thursday and Friday with an intention to buy voters for the upcoming Free Student Union (FSU) poll in constituent colleges of the TU.
During the meeting, Maharjan expressed his commitment to seriously check the irregularities related to the mass admissions.
On Friday, Nepal Commerce Campus was padlocked as the rival unions had accused the establishment faction ANISU-R of admitting 600 students in Bachelor´s and Master´s level paying Rs 4 million.
Similarly, Saraswati Campus has been shut down for an indefinite period as the ANNFSU cadres found that the ANNISU-R was forcing the college administration to admit four students with incomplete documents.
Four Valley-based constituent colleges have also been closed for an indefinite period after union cadres clashed on the same issue on Sunday and Monday. Targeting election, the unions had allegedly admitted around 3000 students in seven colleges spending more than Rs 12 million.
Mass admissions in the TU affiliated colleges were administered by ANNISU-R closed to the UCPN (Maoist), the NSU and ANNFSU as they admitted their cadres in the government colleges taking campus chiefs and administrative officials hostage till midnight on Thursday and Friday.
