NSU submits memo to education minister seeking student polls
Nepal Students Union, the student wing of the ruling Nepali Congress, today submitted a memorandum to Minister for Education Chitralekha Yadav, demanding that Tribhuvan University announce the date for Free Student Union elections without any further delay.
The FSU polls is conducted every two years. But TU has not been able to hold the election for the past five years due to prolonged political transition and misunderstanding among student unions over the poll date and its modality. The memorandum submitted to Minister Yadav, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the TU reads: We hereby demand that you and the government do the needful to announce the FSU poll date and ensure students’ rights to elections.
NSU warned that it would resort to protest if the Ministry of Education and TU failed to address its demands at the earliest. The FSU poll was last held on March 19, 2009.
After receiving the memorandum, Minister Yadav said, “FSU polls have helped strengthen democracy in the country. I will issue directives to TU office-bearers to announce the date of FSU election as soon as possible.” Earlier, NSU cadres had submitted memorandum to the previous government and gheroaed the TU central office, demanding that FSU polls date be fixed.
