Students vandalise TU dept
Students vandalise d the English Department office of Tribhuvan University on Wednesday to protest university’s decision to reconduct the exam held on September 9.
The Office of the Controller of Examination (OCE) at TU on Tuesday had cancelled the examination of Linguistic and Literature of Master’s I Year upon discovering that the question papers resembled the papers of an internal exam conducted three months ago.
Saying that the decision is unacceptable to them, the student s smashed windowpanes and furniture of the English Department at 10:30 am. “Over 100 irate student s resorted to vandalism, even though we were for resolving the problem through a dialogue,” said Associate Prof Amma Raj Joshi, chief of the department. The agitators also staged a sit-in in front of the OCE.
The OCE has rescheduled the exam on October 10. A notice from the National Vigilance Centre (NVC) saying that the question papers resembled the previous exam’s papers and that the English Department should be held accountable for the wrongdoing prompted the TU exam body to annul the exam.
On September 21, the NVC had directed the country’s oldest university to cancel the exam and take action against the professors involved in breaching the privacy of exams. The anti-graft body directly supervised by the Prime Minister’s Office has also warned the concerned bodies, including the OCE, not to repeat the same mistake in the future and adopt efficient measures while conducting exams.
