The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) is offering a six-month internship with our office in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 23 January 2019. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate and post-graduate students interested in security matters, particularly arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, confidence building measures and peace and disarmament education, to get involved with UNRCPD’s work and to assist in the promotion of United Nations global norms of peace and disarmament.
UNRCPD assists countries in Asia and the Pacific in achieving their peace, security and disarmament goals, through provision of substantive support, coordination of activities at sub-regional, regional and international levels, and information sharing on global and regional activities. UNRCPD is part of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
This internship is UNPAID and will require a full-time commitment for six months, working five days per week (Monday – Friday).
Job Position : Intern on Disarmament and Arms Control with UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD)
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of UNRCPD’s Director and direct supervision and management of the Deputy Director (and possibly other officers), the intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, performance of the following duties:
> Assist in monitoring, researching and analyzing trends and developments in the area of peace and disarmament in the region;
> Draft background papers, communications and content for reports etc.;
> Assist in organizing conferences, meetings, workshops and other events on disarmament issues;
> Assist in administrative/logistical tasks related to operation of the Centre; and
> Perform other duties as required.
Required Skills and Experience
Education
> Be enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s degree, equivalent, or higher);
> Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s programme, equivalent, or higher
> Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
> Have the above degree/enrollment in the area of political studies, international or security politics, or closely related other fields.
Experience
> Experience in the field of peace and disarmament or a related area is desirable;
> Experience with website maintenance is advantageous;
> Expertise and knowledge of conducting research;
> Good computer literacy, incl. Microsoft Office (particularly Word and Excel).
Language Requirements:
> Full fluency in spoken and written English;
