Course Description:
This is a three-year residency programme started in 1994.
- To produce specialists in the field of obstetrics, gynaecology and family planning for reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. It also aims in academisation of the institutes to provide higher (standard) level of care to women and their newborns.
Objectives:
- Accquire qualities of sound judgement in managing obstetrical and gynaecological condition to undertake fully independent clinical practice.
- Apply the knowledge, including various aspect of epidemiology, to organize services pertaining to the reproductive health of a woman (preventive, promotive and curative).
- Participate in teaching/learning activities and research in the field of obstetric, gynaecology and family planning.
- Acquire knowledge regarding administration and finance relevant to the practice of obstetric, gynaecology and family planning.

Eligibility Criteria:
Four candidates are selected each academic fear from MBBS graduates.
Only candidates permanently registered with Nepal medical Council and who have worked in an approved health institution will be allowed to appear in an entrance examination
.
Selection of Admission:
Candidate will be selected on merit basis from those who secure fifty percent of the total marks. Subjects will be allocated to the candidate according to their choice of the available seat in the speciality.
Syllabus
Examinations:
Phase I examination will be of applied basic sciences.
In phase examination, there will be both MCQs and short answer questions will 50% marks allocated to each of them.If the candidates fail either in theory or practical in phase I examination, they will reappear in both theory and practical examination.
Phase II examination will consist of thesis approval which must be completed 6 months before the final examination.
Phase III will be the final examination consisting of theory papers (MCQs and short answer questions) and clinical/practical examinaton.
Phase I Examination
(a) Theory :200 marks
The distribution of marks for each subject will be as follows:
Paper I Anatomy 30
Physiology 30
Biophysics 10
Biostatistics 10
Paper II Pathology 40
Pharmacology 30
Biochemistry 10
Internal assessment : Log Book-based (20% of the theory mark)
Practical
Method of examination : OSCE
There will be 10 stations each carrying 10 marks.
Phase II : Thesis
Phase III : Final Examination
Total marks distribution:
Full Mark Pass Mark
Theory 200 100
Clinical/Practical 200 100
Internal assessment will be 20% of the theory mark.
The marks obtained in two papers will be added up and the pass mark will be 50% of the full mark. Similarly, marks obtained in all components of clinical/practical examination will be added together and the pass mark will be 50 % of the full mark. However, failure in theory papers will not be compensated by the marks obtained in clinical/practical examination and vice versa. In case the candidate fails, either in theory or clinical she/he will sit for he final examination after 6 months and appear in both theory final clinical/practical examinations.
