Course Description:
This is a three-year residency programme started in 1994. The programme aims to produce specialists in Internal Medicine who can manage a wide range of medical problems and common emergencies as consultants.
Course Objectives
- To train specialists in Internal medicine with adequate knowledge, attitude and skills to enable them to function as consultants in Internal medicine.
- To develop qualities of having the initiatives creativity, sound judgement and logical deduction so as to provide academic leadership in medicine.
- To develop skills of critical analysis of scientific literature.
- Be conversant with recent advances in medicine.
- To develop skill in thesis writing.
- To develop skills in clinical research.
- To develop skills as a teacher/trainer of a health team.

Eligibility Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent degree in allopathic medicine from a recognized university.
- Full registration with Nepal Medical Council.
- A one-year work experience in any institution approved by IOM for such purpose.
- Passing of post graduate entrance examination and selection as per the merit list of the result.
Selection for Admission
An entrance examination will be conducted for selection into the different post graduate programme.
- A minimum of 50 % marks in each paper separately will be required as qualifying mark for being eligible to get placement in the merit list of successful candidates.
- Enrollment of four students annually will be done strictly on merit basis.
- Candidates are registered for the course will not be allowed to enter other PG programmes during the course.
Syllabus
Methods of training
- The postgraduate students will go through a 3 year full time residential training programme. A preceptor will be designated to each student.
- The PG students will be encouraged towards self-directed learning. The preceptor will function as a guide only.
- Formal lectures will be kept to a minimum.
- Guidance will be provided in Basic Medical Sciences by teachers of Basic Science Department during the first year. Tutorials will be held in Basic Sciences, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology.
- Clinical training will be provided by placement of PG students in medicine department where they will work as residents. They will work in OPD, inpatients and be on 24 hours on call twice a week during which they will clerk cases, and participate in managing patients under supervision. They will be given more responsibility in the 2nd and 3rd year.
- Research topic to write a thesis and defend it before final examination. Preceptor/s will guide and supervise the students in research and thesis writing.
Evaluation Scheme
Evaluation consists of two components:
a. Formative Evaluation and
b. Summative Evaluation
a. Formative Evaluation:
This will be done at the end of each rotation by the designated preceptor and the report will be sent to the Head of Dept./ Coordinator. If the performance is found to be unsatisfactory then the candidate will have to reappear for the evaluation or repeat the rotation as prescribed by the preceptor. The evaluation will be objective based on logbook as to whether the candidate has achieved certain competencies as outlined.
Each formative evaluation score will be carried on and added to the internal assessment mark for final examination.
b. Summative Evaluation:
This will be conducted by the University and will consist of three parts.
Part I : Applied Basic Science Full Mark Pass Mark
- Theory Paper I 100 50
(Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics)
- Theory Paper II 100 50
(Pathology, Microbiology, Biostatics and Pharmacology)
- Practical (OSCE) 100 50
The part I examination will be conducted by the end of first year. A maximum of three attempts will be allowed. Candidates failing in the third attempt will be dropped from the course.
Part II : Thesis Writing
Thesis subject will be chosen and approved by the end of first year. Thesis should be submitted by the second year and there will be external and internal examiners. The candidates will not be allowed to sit or final examination without approval of the thesis.
