Course Description:

Goal:
To produce a comprehensive, compassionate and community-oriented ophthalmologist, who has the ability to exercise sound clinical judgement in dealing with ophthalmic medical surgical and optical problems; who has the ability and desire to continue to update his/her knowledge; who has the ability to recognize his/her limitations. He should be endowed with basic human values and maintain the highest ethical standard of the profession.

 

General Objectives:

The programme is a three years residency training during which the graduates would have acquired the following skills to:

  • To diagnose and manage common opthalmological diseases.
  • To diagnose the complicated ophthalmic condition with the existing facility and to refer them to the higher centre after providing primary care.
  • To explain the pathophysiological mechanisms of all ophthalogical conditions.
  • To manage general ophthalmic emergencies and refer the complicated cases after primary care.
  • To assist in complex superspeciality opthalmic surgeries.
  • To plan and implement community based eye care delivery systems.
  • To develop skills in thesis writing and clinical research.
  • To develop qualities in initatives, creativity, sound judgement and logical deducation so as to provide academic leadershipin eye care management.
  • To develop skill of critical analysis of scientific literatures and recent advances in ophthalmology.
  • To develop ability and desire to continue to update his/her knowledge and skills in ophthalmology.
  • To prepare and present scientific papers.
  • To communicate with his/her patients, peer, community, superiors and subordinates.
  • To develop the highest ethical standard of the profession.
  • To impart education to undergraduates, postgraduates, opthalmic assistants, nurses and community eye health workers.

 

Admission info

Eligibility Criteria:

  • MBBS or equivalent degree in allopathic medicine from a recognized university.
  • Full registration with Nepal Medical Council.
  • As entrance examination will be conducted by the Examination Division, Institute of Medicine.
  • A minimum of 50 % marks will be required to get placement in the merit list of successful candidate.
  • Admission will be done strictly on merit basis.
  • Candidates who are registered in the course will not be allowed to enter other PG Programmes for another three years.

 

Syllabus

Period of Training:

The training period leading to MD in Opthalmology shall be a three years. The department will provide opportunities for learning through didactic means as well as observation and hands-on experiences. Individual differences in talent and capacity will be recognized and when possible met to the fullest extent by the department. The faculty will provide guidance for the residents throughout the training period and if expectations are not fulfilled such failure may be cause for dismissal.

 

Methods of Teaching Learning:

The postgraduate (PG) will go through three years full time residential training. The faculty member contributing to training in special units during the rotation of their duties.

 

The PG students will be encouraged toward self-directed learning. Teacher/Preceptor will function as a guide only. Formal lecturers will be kept to a minimum. PGs are expected to learn as they work in outpatient, inpatient and special clinics under supervision of the faculty members. Students will actively participate in clinical discussion, theoretical presentations and journal presentation of all academic activities within department.

 

Guidance will be provided by the designated faculty in the thesis works.

 

Clinical Training:

The clinical training will be done at the department of Ophthalmology (BP Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Studies and TU Teaching Hospital) where they will be residential and will be given graded responsibilities for the patient care management. They will also be rotated to various eye hospitals at national and regional levels.

 

Evaluation:

This consists of two components:
a. Formative evaluation and
b. Summative evaluation

 

a. Formative Evaluation

This will be done in every six months with short questions in the respective subjects in accordance with the expected skills at the periods. This will be done five times Eva 1 - 5. The performance of the outpatient and inpatient jobs will be recorded in the logbooks. The evaluation will be objective, based on the logbook as to whether the candidate has achieved certain competencies as outlined. Each formative evaluation score will be carried on and added to the internal assessment mark for final examination. It will be pre-requisite to have minimum marks of 50% for appearing in the final examination.


b. Summative Evaluation

This will be conducted by the examination section of the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University and will consist of three parts.

Thesis Writing:

Thesis subject will be chosen and approved by the end of six-months. Thesis should be completed by the end of the second year. The final draft of the thesis should be submitted to the department six months prior to the examination. It would be examined by internal and external examiners. The candidate will not be allowed to sit for final examination without approval of the thesis.
