Disability no bar to education
Chitwan: Despite difficulties to move hands and legs, Bharat Gurung, a differently abled boy from Pithawa VDC-1 in the district, has managed to pursue education.
A sixth-grader at local Bhadrakali Secondary School, he writes by holding a pen between his teeth and turns the pages of his books with the help of his tongue.
Bharat’s mother Chandramaya said despite his congenital disability, Bharat showed willingness to study after seeing his brother Sajan pursue his education. He was first enrolled in grade three in the school after learning basic education at home.
Bharat’s daily routine starts after getting up at 6 am. After having defecated with the help of his grand father Aita Singh and finishing homework, he goes to the school on a wheel chair. “My friends help me go to school and come back home. They also help me study and defecate in the school,” he said.
Teacher Sarala Bhandari said Bharat is good at study despite the difficulties he is facing. “He regularly does his homework and is disciplined,” she said, informing that his favourite subject is mathematics.
Besides study, Bharat is also interested in sports. “Football is my favourite sport. I watch my friends play it at times,” he said.
He is receiving Rs 17,000 in scholarship annually. Originally from Ghyampe Deurali VDC in Gorkha district, he has been living with his mother at his maternal grandparents’ house in Chitwan.
