Now no stream-based education in grade 11 and 12
Sept. 21: Unveiling the new curriculum of grade 11 and 12 recently, the Curriculum Development Centre of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has eliminated the stream-based education in schools.
The new policy and structure of the school level education has formally ended the stream-based education like Science, Management, Humanities, Law and Education and made English, Nepali and Social Study compulsory in grade 11 and Life Skill, English and Nepali in grade 12.
This new curriculum will enable the students to choose the subjects from different categories of elective subjects. There are three compulsory subjects and three optional subjects in both grades and the students can choose physics and sociology together.
The CDC has categorised the optional subjects in four groups and the students have to choose one subject each from the three groups. The students can also choose one extra subject in both grades which is not mandatory.
According to the provision set by the CDC, to get enrollment on grade 11 with physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, the students have to secure at least 'C' plus grade in English, Science and Mathematics with 1.6 GPA in aggregate in Secondary Education Examination (SEE).
Likewise, the students who had secured below 1.6 GPA in aggregate in SEE are not qualified to enroll in any subject of grade 11.
Although the government announced to implement the new course of grade 11 fromthis year, the operators of the private schools have requested the government not to implement the new course from this year.
Hari Singh K.C, assistant campus chief of South Western State College, Basundhara, said they had not objected to the elimination of the stream-based system but have only requested the government not to implement the new curricula from this year.
K.C said that implementation of the new curriculum in this pandemic was not good. According to him, it is very challenging to complete even the current course from alternative modes.
He said teachers and other stakeholders required orientation to adopt the courses which was challenging at this time.
However, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel recently said the new curriculum would come into effect from this year.
